PROPERTIES:
Turmeric: joint discomfort, inflammation and pain reliever
The essential oil of turmeric has been traditionally used in topical application to help soothe joint discomfort,
relieve pain and alleviate inflammation.
Arnica montana: analgesic and anti-inflammatory
Historically, Arnica montana flowers have been used as an herbal medicine for centuries and they have been
generally employed for analgesic and anti-inflammatory purposes. According to ESCOP (European Scientific
Cooperative On Phytotherapy) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), topical use of Arnica flowers is
indicated for bruises, sprains and swelling1.
Arnica flowers effectiveness on osteoarthritis relief has been clinically tested with good results. A clinical trial
where an arnica gel was evaluated in patients with osteoarthritis of the hand or knee showed a significant decrease
in pain, stiffness, and restriction-of-function after gel application twice daily for 3 weeks2. In another randomized
trial, a similar arnica gel showed a comparable effectiveness to that of ibuprofen for reducing the intensity of
pain and improvement in hand function3.
Devil’s claw: to alleviate pain
ESCOP and EMA accept the traditional use of Devil’s claw root for joint pain relief. Several clinical trials have
shown its effectiveness in osteoarthritis-related pain treatment¹. Devil’s claw has been used in Herbal Medicine
to help relieve joint pain associated with OA4 5. Extract of devil’s claw has shown to reduce pain and increase
mobility significantly in patients with OA in a randomized clinical trial6.
Rosemary: to soothe muscle and joint pain
Rosemary extracts have been traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as supportive therapy to help relieve muscle
and joint pain associated with rheumatism7 8 9 10. They are also commonly used topically as adjuvants in the
treatment of rheumatic affections¹.
Melaleuca: muscle relaxant and analgesic
Melaleuca oil is claimed to have muscle relaxant and analgesic properties when applied topically11.
Hydrolysed collagen: enhancer of collagen synthesis
Hydrolysed (soluble) collagen may stimulate the joint matrix cells to synthesize collagen, therefore helping to
maintain the structure of the joint and potentially to aid joint comfort.
Chondroitin and Glucosamine: as osteoarticular joint pain relievers
Chondroitin is part of a group of molecules known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which are present in the
connective tissues of the body and have structural and cohesive functions. Chondroitin sulphate is present in
the human cartilage, bone, cornea, skin and arterial walls. Chondroitin sulphate helps to relieve joint pain
associated with OA12.
Glucosamine is also part of the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) group of molecules, and it is present in the cartilage
matrix and synovial matrix, among others. It helps relieve joint pain associated with OA, protects against the
deterioration of cartilage and also maintains healthy cartilage and/or joint health13.
A clinical trial showed effectiveness of a topically administered combination of glucosamine sulphate,
chondroitin sulphate and champhor in relieving the pain from OA of the knee with an evident improvement
after 4 weeks treatment14.
Curarti cremi-gel topicum has a slight cooling effect, it is perfume free and it does not contain parabens.
